ADHD and Autism Referrals for Children
If you are concerned that your child may have ADHD or autism, the referral process depends on your child’s age:
- Children under 5 years: Parents should speak with their health visitor and nursery (if attending) to discuss concerns. Health visitors and early years settings are best placed to gather the necessary information to support a referral.
- Children aged 5 years and over: Parents should raise concerns with their child’s school. Teachers and Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) play a key role in completing the required assessments and supporting the referral process.
Please note GPs do not make direct referrals for ADHD or autism assessments in children. The referral must come via the health visitor, nursery, or school, who will work with you to provide the evidence needed for assessment and diagnosis.
